THIS YEAR FEDERAL CANDIDATES and campaigns will spend more than $1 billion trying to convince Americans that if you send them to Washington, they will reduce spending, cut waste, solve America’s debt crisis, eliminate world hunger, and bring about world peace (maybe, just maybe, they will be able to bring about world peace this time).

The problem is that over the last 30 years our national debt has ballooned from a little over $1 trillion to nearly $16 trillion—an abject failure, if cutting spending and reducing debt were the goals. Why?

The Political Bust of TV Ads

Let’s be honest: as a medium, television just isn’t what it used to be. We live in a digital age, where the glowing screen in our living rooms that once dominated information and entertainment now has competition from a myriad of sources. From Facebook to YouTube and tablet publications to on-demand streaming video, to the existence of DVRs and TiVo, television is being challenged from all fronts. And it’s losing.

Yet, as the 2012 campaign rages on, billions of dollars will be spent on television advertising. In 2008, more than $2 billion was spent on political television advertisements including expenditures by candidates, parties, and advocacy groups according to the Campaign Media Analysis Group. In this year of the ubiquitous SuperPACs, the number will probably be twice as high. Yes, $4 billion dollars on TV ads.

But look at the bright side: at least consultants and TV stations will be doing well in this economy.

ELKHART LAKE, WI (WTAQ) - Most people may not believe that politics and racing mix.

But a unique partnership will promote a political message to thousands this weekend in Elkhart Lake.

American Majority, a conservative leaning group, is sponsoring the MacDonald Motorsports #81 car in NASCAR’s Nationwide Series race in Elkhart Lake. The car will be driven by Jason Bowles at Road America.

President of American Majority Ned Ryun says thousands of fans attend NASCAR events every week and even more watch on TV. He says to sponsor Bowles’ car throughout all 33 races on the Nationwide circuit required approval by officials at the highest level of NASCAR. He says even then a few track owners have been leery about bringing politics to the racetrack.

With Queen Elizabeth’s 60^th Anniversary on the throne being celebrated last week, royal watchers across America were glued to televisions and tabloids to hear the details of the lavish events marking the life and reign of a truly historic public figure. While it’s behavior I don’t quite understand, royal watching is a hobby for many Americans. Maybe it’s because monarchy is so foreign to us here in the United States. It’s something that happens “over there.” But as the economic crisis continues to threaten American freedom, the question needs be asked, “Is royalty a truly foreign concept or do we have our own American royalty in everything but name?”

Tea Party 4, Everyone Else 0

In case you’re keeping track, the supposedly sleepy and deflated tea party has been racking up the score against liberal foes and establishment Republicans over the past couple of months.

For more than a year, as the tea partiers reorganized and regrouped following the 2010 elections, an evolution has been taking place. The hundreds of local groups that still exist across America are becoming more substantive, more strategic and more organized. The tea party is growing up and as a result it remains a potent political force not just against liberal forces but as an accountability mechanism for a GOP that has too often underwhelmed the conservative grassroots. Just ask the soon-to-be former senator from Indiana.

It’s been a week since conservatives overpowered the public sector unions in Wisconsin and gave the taxpayers of that state a decisive victory in the battle to rein in government spending. The win gave the American majority hope that they can retake their government from union forces that have burdened most of us with seemingly insurmountable debt. As Wisconsin’s lessons for the conservative movement become clear, no message can be clearer than the viability of a sustainable fiscally conservative human infrastructure to counter the left. Exploring how that infrastructure came together in Wisconsin gives us a blueprint for success in other states buckling under progressive overreach.

This week, America saw what real hope and change actually looks like. The Wisconsin recall fight wasn’t about Republicans and Democrats. It wasn’t about Obama. It was about the power of the majority of taxpayers who stood up against being fleeced by the very public employee union bosses who have put them on the hook for trillions of debt. Beginning fifteen months ago and culminating with the recall victory, the conservative movement struck back in Wisconsin and redefined the national fight for America’s future. Now is not a time for celebration. It’s time to take the fight to the next level.

It’s sponsoring a team on NASCAR’s nationwide series. But for American Majority, the real race is off the track, where the group targets NASCAR enthusiasts in hopes of boosting turnout in November.

There’s been chatter of late that the Democrats’ decision to hold their national convention in Charlotte this summer could create, as Bloomberg Businessweek called it, “an awkward fit.”

Conservatives relish the idea.

American Majority — and the NASCAR racecar it sponsors — hits the Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend, and the group’s founder, Ned Ryun, is enjoying the storyline: that conservatives are descending on a town soon to be overrun with Democrats.
